![]() When you see a green light on the AirPort Extreme, power off the AirPort Extreme. Change the setting for Router from DHCP and NAT to Off (Bridge Mode) Click Update to save the new settings. Click the Network tab at the top of the next window. I am wondering if i need to actually set up the machine before i evaluate what color the LED is or whether it is flashing. Click Edit in the smaller window that appears. I am thinking to simply remove my TIME CAPSULE from everything so the data cannot get corrupted and so i can SET UP this device but i am not sure if i am simply wasting my time.ĭoes that question make sense? or was it answered earlier and i missed it? I am under the impression i need to do a FULL SETUP before i get the green light and that i won't get a green light until i set it up on the network. So i have not gone through the full setup. In the first image i posted you can see the prompt where it says it is will REPLACE my time machine and the "base station" (associated with my TIME CAPSULE BACKUP) "will be reset to default settings". i don't want to do something dumb with my data so i am trying to ask questions first. i had to STOP setup because it is giving me a prompt that is confusing to me with respect to my TIME CAPSULE backup. ![]() What i am trying to ask is that i have NOT gone through a setup for the device. anyway, i understand that the solid amber (in this case it is now blinking amber) is not working. for some reason i only see it in my email but not on the forum. This can be fine, though, depending upon your use. Thanks for the reply. However, your maximum thoughput will be cut in half as the radio acts as a relay station to the main router. A Time Capsule is virtually the same product, except that the AirPort Extreme does not have a built in hard drive. If you can't connect by Ethernet cable, you can set the 2nd unit to "extend a wireless network" with all the same settings. ![]() Ideally, you'd connect the "WiFI extension" unit to the main router with an Ethernet cable and set it to "create a wireless network" with the exact same SSID, security settings, and password, as your main router. OTOH, you'll save time by leaving your existing 5th-gen as primary router and just setting up the new one as extender. If you download large files/lots of data it would (again, assuming your ISP connection is faster than the WiFi connection).Ĭheck your computers that are WiFi-connected - if they have "ac" capability then you might consider using the newer Airport Extreme near them. Also, if your main measure of throughput is "how fast I can download a large file," then your ISP connection might already be the bottleneck and the faster WiFi speeds unnoticeable.įor what my family typically does with their phones and laptops (web browsing, email), I doubt "n" vs. However, the connecting device (e.g., Mac or smart phone) must also have 802.11ac capability to get that better throughput. ![]() Looking at the above-referenced page, the real difference between the two is that the 6th-gen can use the 802.11ac WiFi standard, which can give significantly better throughput compared to 802.11n. (According to the page, you can do this with the 5th-gen also, if you've got the most up to date firmware.) However, you can connect an external USB 2.0 hard disk to it, and then use that external disk for Time Machine backups. The A1521 is a "6th generation" Airport Extreme ( ).
